Five reasons to become a Lynx

June 9, 2019

Choosing where to get your college degree and spend the next few years of your life is a major decision. There are many important qualities to consider before you commit to one university. Stay calm – you’ll make the right choice.

If CU Denver is high on your list, here are some things to consider before you seal the deal on your acceptance letter. And once you do seal the deal, be sure to announce your official college choice and use #CUDenSaidYes on social to join your new Lynx family!

1. Over 100 academic degrees

From accounting to recording arts, from pre-health to environmental studies – no matter your area of interest, you will find an academic program just right for you, as well as experiential and global learning opportunities. You’ll choose from more than 100 academic degrees and programs that empower you to learn with purpose and find a fulfilling career.

2. Denver is your playground

Denver is a dynamic, enterprising and cosmopolitan city, and at its heart is CU Denver. With no palpable boundary between school and city, students combine academics, clubs and leadership opportunities with the Mile High City’s sports, art, networking, culture and nightlife.

More than an incredible place to explore and take advantage of an active lifestyle, Denver is a fast-growing city and an ideal location to launch your career. The metropolitan area is home to hundreds of businesses, from entrepreneurial startups to Fortune 500 companies, as well as nonprofits and health care facilities. So you can land fantastic internships, amazing volunteer opportunities and maybe even your dream job.

3. Learn with purpose through hands-on experience

We know that 80 percent of new college graduates have completed one or more internships, and we want to make sure you can compete and succeed through the “internship advantage.” That’s why we work hard to connect you to real-world experiences that are relevant to your long-term career goals. Students here are awarded over 600 highly coveted internships around the country every year.

Once you decide to seek an internship, we’re with you every step of the way. You get mentorship and support before, during and after your internship to make sure you maximize the learning and professional experience – whether you’re working for Disney or the Denver Botanic Gardens, Habitat for Humanity or History Colorado.

4. Diversity is a core value

We honor diverse experiences and perspectives, in the belief that they enhance the educational experience for all. We strive to create welcoming and respectful learning environments, and foster a culture of inclusion.

Our approach to diversity deals with many aspects of identity, including gender, race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, ability status, veteran status, nationality, religion and socioeconomic background.

  • At CU Denver, 58% of new freshmen were students of color in Fall 2016.
  • The number and proportion of Pell grant recipients at CU Denver reached a high of 3,738 in Fall 2016. Roughly half of CU Denver baccalaureate degree earners in the 2015-16 academic year were Pell grant recipients.
  • The proportion (and number) of undergraduate students of color for CU Denver and CU Anschutz Medical Campus combined has increased each year since 2007, reaching 44% in Fall 2016.

5. Find your best work/study balance

We understand that for many students, a break in their professional life to pursue a degree isn’t financially possible. At CU Denver, our students have opportunities that empower them to find and follow their own unique paths while getting a great return on their educational investment. Our flexible class options and schedules allow students to keep their jobs and continue to advance in their career while getting their diploma.
