President Benson and Regent Chair CarriganThe annual CU Night at the Stock Show was held this past weekend with more than one surprise. This year, Ralphie V the CU Boulder buffalo took her first tour of the Stock Show ring to loud cheers from the crowd.

More than 1,400 University of Colorado Denver | Anschutz Medical Campus alumni were in attendance to witness the classic events of the rodeo including bareback riding, mutton busting and steer wrestling.

The ever popular event, mutton busting, was a crowd favorite even getting a stand ovation. After the kids, some of who were CU alumni’s children, had taken their rides they were given trophies by ‘real’ cowboys.

CU President Bruce Benson, as well as Board of Regents Chairman Michael Carrigan were at the helm of the Stock Show Stage Coach. On a second stagecoach rode CU Boulder mascot Chip and members of the Ralphie Handler team and equestrian team.

Throughout the evening, rodeo announcer Boyd Polhamus, made remarks about CU and all the great work done by the four campuses as well as digs to other rival schools in the district.

CU Denver alumna Stacey Fransen said of the evening, “It was a really fun night. All the CU references were a lot of fun and made it extra special.”

Another CU Denver alumnus, Mike Spangler said, “I love the Stock Show and to have a CU night is great.” Spangler added, “It was really cool to see Ralphie run and to have Chip here. Hopefully next year we will be able to see the lynx make an appearance.”
