Enhancing IT Solutions and Services on the Denver Campus: Douglas Sicker Named Interim Information Strategy and Services Officer

February 3, 2022

Dear Faculty and Staff,

With the start of a new year and our continued efforts to actualize our 2030 strategic plan, we have turned our attention to some of the operational issues that many of you have identified as needing attention. One of these key areas is the Office of Information and Technology (OIT).

The OIT team, currently a shared system with the CU Anschutz Medical Campus, supports our campus’ infrastructure and processes, which we rely upon daily. This office does not possess enough resources focused directly on the diverse needs of our Denver Campus. After much consideration, we have decided to build a team that will focus on the academic and instructional areas of this campus. To build this team out, we have enlisted the expertise of CU Denver Professor of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering Douglas Sicker.

Doug has provided campus leadership with invaluable advice in a wide array of areas, including his existing role as chief computing officer, and now with the IT team where he will serve as interim information strategy and services officer. This position will provide IT a greater voice with the Chancellor and executive-level leadership, which will enable us to address specific challenges that our campus faces. Doug, in conjunction with Interim Chief Information Officer David Lowry, will provide a path forward for our renewed campus vision, while working closely with both Chris Smith, vice chancellor for information strategy and services and Laura Morris, associate vice chancellor and CIO for CU Anschutz, to ensure service delivery and growth for both campuses.

We will also begin a search for an assistant vice chancellor of IT services and operations, who will oversee customer relationship management (CRM), classroom technology, academic technology for both campuses, and a strategy and analysis team at CU Denver. We hope to have this role filled this semester. David Lowry will continue to serve as interim CIO until the AVC of IT operations role is filled. He will then transition to CU Anschutz OIT as director of planning and analysis, while still working closely with the team on the Denver campus.

We believe that these leadership changes will provide you, the members of our community, with the foundation and structure that will allow our campus to grow and flourish. It will help support our future goals and allow us to build our campus stronger, with a more intentional focus on you.
