A lot goes on behind the scenes to make sure the spaces we use—whether it be an office, classroom, outdoor space, or common area—function and support our daily needs as a Lynx community. That’s where the Facilities Management and Planning team comes in. Led by Assistant Vice Chancellor Cary Weatherford, who’s been at the university for nearly 25 years and knows the campus well, the team of 22 people supports all aspects of CU Denver’s built environment.
“We plan for the future development needs of our institution, design and build the projects that advance our mission, operate and maintain our campus buildings, lead the institution into a more sustainable future, and maximize the use of our campus spaces,” Weatherford said. “I’m amazed at what this team accomplishes every day and the energy and pride they bring to their work.”
CU Denver News talked to a few leaders of this team to learn more about their work.
New Website Coming This October
Facilities Management and Planning was formed two years ago from three independent departments: Facilities Management, Institutional Planning, and Facilities Projects. Because of that, their web presence was decentralized and access to information and service requests could be difficult to find. That changes this week when the team launches its first-ever Denver-focused website.
Designed to guide Lynx to the most frequently requested services and policies that are managed by the team, the website will offer easy access to facilities updates, work orders forms, information on custodial services and sustainability efforts, space and project requests, parking information, and more.
The website is now live at this link. Faculty and staff are encouraged to explore the site and use the new functions.
A Focus on Facilities and Customer Service
The Facilities Management and Planning team is made up of five service areas: Space Management, Campus Planning, Design & Construction, Sustainability, and Facilities Management. Two of these areas, Facilities Management and Design and Construction, are recognized as departments within Facilities Management and Planning.
Led by Executive Director for Building Maintenance and Operations Gregory Gibson, Facilities Management is responsible for building operations and maintenance functions, all while providing stellar customer service. “Our facilities management team maintains a resolute focus on innovation, collaboration, and creativity to keep our campus buildings and grounds in optimal condition for the many functions and needs of our university community,” Gibson said. “We are a tightly bonded work group, taking pride in providing the best environment for our students, faculty, and staff.”
The Design & Construction team, led by Director of Design and Construction, and Campus Architect Meg Hohnholt, supports faculty and staff on any space-related construction projects. This includes defining a project’s scope and important design considerations, assembling a project team, and making the project a reality. In addition, her team is delegated by the Office of State Architect to ensure that all CU Denver building projects comply with state procurement laws, fiscal rules, and guidelines. “We are responsible for providing all the administrative, management, and professional services needed to successfully deliver a variety of projects, including new construction, renovation, and replacement of our facilities and infrastructure,” Hohnholt said.
Gibson and Hohnholt agreed that their work is successful because of their teams. And while much of the Facilities Management and Planning unit’s work is out-of-sight, it is critical for maintaining a safe and thriving campus in the heart of downtown Denver.
