Five Ways to Spend a Spring Break Staycation in Denver

March 12, 2024

Each year, CU Denver celebrates the halfway point of spring semester with a well-earned week off classes for students and faculty. This year, spring break is from March 19 through March 23. If you’re staying in Denver during the break, there’s no shortage of activities and events to keep you busy.

1. Volunteer At Food Bank of the Rockies

The largest hunger-relief organization in the Rocky Mountain region, Food Bank of the Rockies, is based in Denver. If you’re looking for a way to give back to the community, consider signing up for a volunteer shift, or grab some friends and sign up for a group shift. Volunteer times are Monday through Saturday from 8:45 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

If you’re a student, Student Life & Campus Community is partnering with two local organizations, the animal shelter Ferret Dreams Rescue & Adoption and the nursing community Denver North Care Center, to offer volunteer opportunities. Click here to sign up.

2. Catch a Sports Game

Denver is home to some talented sports teams, including the 2023 NBA champions, the Denver Nuggets, and the 2022 Stanley Cup winners, the Colorado Avalanche. Both teams play at nearby Ball Arena, so if you’re a sports fan, head there for a basketball game or hockey game.

3. Rock Out at a Music Venue

Denver offers a world-class and eclectic music scene. Mission Ballroom attracts some well-known artists and gives off a true concert-hall feel, whereas the Marquis Theater has a more intimate feel (it’s also a pizza joint).

4. Head to the Mountains

One great thing about Denver is its proximity to the mountains and dozens of hiking trails, for everyone from beginners to advanced adventurers. Check out this list of hikes within two hours of the city.

5. Get Some Fresh Air Near Campus
