From the Provost: CAM Dean Search Will Extend Into Fall

May 9, 2023

Dear faculty and staff,

Last December we commenced our search for a new dean to lead the College of Arts & Media. The search committee, co-chaired by CAP Dean Nan Ellin and SEHD Associate Dean Antwan Jefferson, worked tirelessly to present four finalists with very solid academic credentials and significant levels of relevant experience. I commend the team for its thorough work.

Following due diligence to establish a strong alignment of each candidate with CAM’s leadership needs, a critical consideration, I extended an offer to a candidate of exceptionally strong alignment. That person ultimately pursued a higher-level opportunity at another university. Not persuaded that the other candidates were the right fit for CAM’s leadership needs at this time, I decided to extend the search.

As such, we will make the same job posting active again in the coming weeks. The search firm will collect applications over the summer, with the goal of presenting finalists during the fall semester. I look forward to robust input from students, faculty, and staff as we search for a dean who demonstrates expertise in workforce needs and connections in the evolving national arts and media industry landscape.

Ideally, the new dean would start on January 1, 2024, or as soon as possible thereafter. We are fortunate to have outstanding interim leadership with co-deans Nate Thompson and Joann Brennan, each of whom has more than 20 years of experience as esteemed CAM faculty members. I am grateful that they have agreed to continue serving in these leadership roles until we identify a permanent dean.

I appreciate everyone’s engagement throughout this process. Of course, I hoped to have better news to share today. However, it’s more important we find the right person who is a strong mutual fit, rather than rush a process. We owe that to you and our students.

Thank you for your understanding and patience.

Provost and Executive Vice Chancellor for Academic and Student Affairs
