There are a limited range of hairstyles considered "professional" in the workplace — especially for women. As Traci Sitzmann, an associate professor of management at the University of Colorado Denver Business School, put it to Business Insider, "if you look the part, it increases the chances that you're going to get the part." She co-authored a study of a phenomenon known as the “beauty is beastly effect,” a term for physically attractive women being discriminated against when applying for masculine sex-typed jobs.
