Why cautious parents should choose vaccination for their children

By Jennifer Reich, professor of sociology at the University of Colorado Denver and author of "Calling the Shots: Why Parents Reject Vaccines." Even before the coronavirus pandemic, some parents felt vaccine decisions for their children were challenging and fraught with uncertainties. As researchers who have spent more than a decade examining vaccine decision-making, we have heard this small but growing group of parents describe their concerns time and again. The fears vary, but they almost always pertain to safety, such as whether a child might be one of the unlucky ones to suffer an adverse reaction or whether there are long-term effects of vaccines that are not yet understood.

Tuesday marked the end of a remarkable run of eight straight advances for the S&P 500 SPX, and to be honest, apart from Tesla TSLA, things weren’t actually that bad — 249 components rose versus 247 that fell. So what’s driving investment behavior that has sent the S&P 500 up 25% this year? Is it fear of missing out? Yosef Bonaparte, the director of external affairs in finance and associate professor of finance at CU Denver Business School and a Janus Henderson Investors research associate, decided to quantify the term that has been around for around 20 years, and used widely enough that it has spawned academic research and even an exchange-traded fund with FOMO as a ticker. In his own research paper, Bonaparte devises a FOMO index, based on market momentum, Google keyword searches and investor use of margin accounts.

Denver was a reform darling. Now, union-supported candidates hold all 7 board seats.

The Denver school board is once again politically unanimous — but in the opposite way it was four years ago. In a complete flip, all seven members will now be backed by the Denver teachers union instead of by education reform organizations. Rob Gould, president of the Denver Classroom Teachers Association, and Carrie Olson, president of the school board, said they see the result as a vote of confidence in teachers. But Parker Baxter, director of the Center for Education Policy Analysis at the University of Colorado Denver, said that interpretation discounts the educators who don’t belong to the union, including teachers who work at Denver’s 58 charter schools.

Unexpected Effect: Horror Movies Can Be Good for Your Health

Andrew Scahill, an assistant professor at the University of Colorado at Denver and an industry-advising horror film expert, asks the following questions: "When we think about what horror offers us, how could it be pleasant in any way? Why should we expose ourselves to a negative effect?" The scientist also has an answer ready: "Today we have something that could be called "proxy theory". It essentially states that horror movies in some way allow us to control our fear of death by providing us with a substitute experience."

From redlining to greening: Coalition wants to restore nature to RiNo, Five Points

Nearly half of Denver is paved over, up from less than 20% in the mid-1970s, according on a 2019 Denver Post analysis. American Forests said more trees can cool neighborhoods and reduce the “urban heat island effect” that is expected to worsen with climate change. Daytime temperatures in the paved-over, treeless parts of a city can be 5 to 7 degrees warmer during the day and even hotter at night.

In RiNo, only about 9% of the area has tree canopy compared to an average of 24% for the city overall, said Mallory Luebke, a research assistant at the University of Colorado-Denver’s school of architecture and planning.

Undocumented workers need booster shots, too

As a researcher at the University of Colorado, Denver, Sarah B. Horton, an associate professor of anthropology, has been conducting interviews with undocumented Latinx workers in Colorado since the start of the pandemic. She constantly hear stories of unsafe conditions from vulnerable workers each week.

"Leticia, an undocumented housekeeper for a private homeowner in Aspen, fell sick because her employer asked her to drive three hours away to retrieve a friend from the airport," said Horton. "The man, who later tested positive for COVID-19, jumped in her car without a mask.

Maria Vazquez and Guests Celebrate Flamenco in Raices

Maria Vazquez formed a professional company in 2015 to bring renowned guest artists to complement her company's performances in the community. For the show Raices, she's bringing together a mix of flamenco artists from Venezuela, Canada, Cuba, France and Spain, as well as the United States, who "will explore the roots of Spanish culture through [flamenco's] unique combinations of sound, beauty, and movement."

In addition to the Legends of Dance honors, Vazquez and Flamenco Denver were showcased in the recent documentary Three Worlds, One Stage, directed by University of Colorado Denver professors Jessica McGaugh and Roma Sur. The film is currently streaming on Amazon Prime.

The latest twist in the ‘Great Resignation’: Retiring but delaying Social Security

For better-off Americans, the pandemic economy created some of the strongest incentives to retire in modern history, with generous federal stimulus, incredible market gains, skyrocketing home values and health concerns drawing many Americans into early retirement.

"Usually in economic downturns, we see increased reliance on Social Security programs, and thought that's what was going to be coming with the pandemic," said Lauren Hersch Nicholas, an economist at the University of Colorado at Denver who has studied the phenomenon. "The claiming numbers just don't show that at all."

Deadly Brighton police chase raises question: When should police engage in vehicle pursuits?

The pursuit lasted less than two minutes. When it was over, two bystanders — one in a nearby car, the other a pedestrian — were dead, killed by a driver allegedly fleeing police in a stolen vehicle. Determining whether high-speed police chases, like the one in Brighton, are permitted under departmental policy can often be murky and revolve around certain definitions of “imminent danger to the public” that can be subjective, police experts say. “The fact that he immediately ran into a police car, that does change the crime,” said Paul Taylor, an assistant professor with the University of Colorado Denver and law enforcement instructor. “It’s not merely a property crime anymore.”
