As Times and Students Change, Can Faculty Change, Too?
Some faculty don’t recognize how the demographics, and thus the needs, of students are changing.
At issue is a gap between many professors’ own experience and that of their students.
“You have professors, potentially, who make the assumption that your schooling is the same as my schooling,” said Sean Morris, director of the Digital Pedagogy Lab at the University of Colorado at Denver. “Even within a generation, that’s changed.”

Crisis Gives Fake Cops an Opening to Exploit

A 2012 study of 56 incidents of police impersonation found that the perpetrators fell into three general categories: Many were “common crooks” looking for a quick shakedown; a few were “cop wannabes” attracted to the authority and ego of policing; and several were driven by “uncommon compulsions” — impersonating officers to engage in sexual misconduct.
Callie Rennison, a professor at the University of Colorado Denver, who helped to conduct the study, said impersonating a police officer was easy because it required little more than a few basic tools of law enforcement like a flashing blue light or a Ford Crown Victoria.

Gold will continue to outperform silver

Tom Brady, executive director of the J.P. Morgan Center for Commodities at the University of Colorado Denver Business School, said in a report for Murenbeeld & Associates, that safe-haven demand will continue to support gold prices while weak industrial demand will weigh on silver.
“I am expecting the current global recession to persist well into the third quarter of this year followed by a slow recovery. As such, I am anticipating the ratio to persist (in the 100 range) over the coming weeks,” he said.

Coronavirus forces some Colorado cities to try virtual democracy

Professor Todd Ely, director of the Center for Local Government Research and Training at the University of Colorado at Denver, said no matter how good the technology gets, virtual meetings will never trump in-person gatherings when it comes to conducting local civic business.
“Digital democracy complements our traditional governance processes but isn’t a long-term substitute,” he said. “… Long-term, authentic civic participation and engagement requires relationship building and is challenging online.”

Among the many moving pieces that have to be thought of when it comes to managing coronavirus, one of the biggest and most critical pieces is trying not to overload hospitals.
“No health system on Earth can handle every person getting sick at once,” said Rulon Stacey, former CEO of Poudre Valley Health System and the director of graduate programs in health administration for University of Colorado Denver. “That’s why we need to flatten the curve, so we can take care of everyone getting sick, but not at once.”

hanks to isolation and the need for information, social media use has reached obsession levels for some during the pandemic, said Lan Liang, an assistant professor of marketing at the University of Colorado Denver who is studying how social media product design affects mental health.
“It is such an unsettling moment in the world, and some people, like myself, could be very anxious to know everything,” Liang said. “I remember there were a few days when I could not do anything but constantly checking the latest news online across various social media platforms. It was unhealthy.”

Denver RTD moves May service changes up to April as it deals with financial stress surrounding novel coronavirus pandemic

Like other transit service providers, the financial impact will be severe for Denver RTD. While a small portion of the agency’s budget comes from fares, a larger portion comes from sales and use tax, which are expected to be down significantly with the shuttering of restaurants, bars, retail outlets and ticketed events.
“The issues, though, are far from unique to RTD and municipal transit,” said Todd L. Ely, Ph.D., associate professor at the University of Colorado Denver School of Public Affairs.

And yet, he points out, the previously tight labor market could work to some workers' advantage.
