As Denver’s stay-at-home order goes into place, breweries get a reprieve

Wayne Cascio, a professor of management at the University of Colorado Denver, said that small and locally owned retail businesses particularly could have a tough time surviving any extended shut-down period if they can’t bring in revenues to pay workers or rent or buy supplies.
“If they can stay in business, they’ll probably weather the storm. But if they have to shut down and restart, I think at least a percentage of them can’t go on,” he said. “If they can’t get loans and they are undercapitalized, there’s no way further to continue the business.”

Wayne Cascio, a distinguished professor of management at the University of Colorado Denver, has studied the ability of companies to bounce back after an economic downturn. He said those who keep critical staff on board recover faster and perform much better going forward than those who cut to the bone.
"Given the choice of letting go of assets, like cash, or letting go of workers, don’t make a knee-jerk reaction," Cascio advised.

Safely sharing the road with cyclists

Aiming to better understand bicycling safety, researchers at the University of Colorado Denver and the University of New Mexico found in 2019 that cities with protected and separated bike lanes (lanes with some type of buffer) had 44% fewer deaths and 50% fewer serious injuries than the average city.
However, although protected and separated lanes are critical to improving safety, the study also found that painted bike lanes provide no improvement to road safety and if protected, separated lanes are not possible — it is actually safer for bicyclists if there are no bicycle road markings at all.

Domestic violence nonprofits prepare for increased abuse

Domestic violence and child abuse organizations are preparing for an increased need for services to keep people safe in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic and stay-at-home orders.
“Most domestic violence happens in the home, proven through research; it doesn’t happen outside of the home,” says Barbara Paradiso, director at the Center on Domestic Violence at the University of Colorado Denver. “So when we say to people you have to stay at home with the person that is your abuser, then the risk increases exponentially.”

University of Colorado President Mark Kennedy has chosen the new chancellor of the system's Denver campus.
“Michelle Marks is a proven, visionary leader with an excellent track record of fostering student success," Kennedy said in a prepared statement. "She has an innovative mindset that will help the campus make strides serving its students, the community and state. She also has a deep commitment to the diversity that is a hallmark of CU Denver. We are thrilled to have her join the CU family.”

Make4Covid Using 3D to Fight PPE Shortage

Make4Covid, a collaboration of Colorado’s higher education community, medical professionals and other entrepreneurs, has been working to make masks and face shields using 3-D printing technology for health-care workers battling the coronavirus outbreak.
According to Kristin Wood, senior associate dean of innovation and engagement at the University of Colorado Denver, the project was initiated by the CU Anschutz Medical Center and its Inworks program a few weeks ago, and he has been collaborating with them ever since.

Michael Brohman, a sculpture teacher at the University of Colorado Denver, uses bronze sculpture to make frank conceptual installations infused with unsettling imagery and themes of inequality and social justice. A longtime and now former member of the Pirate: Contemporary Art co-op, Brohman’s memorable shows at that space have twice been named in Westword’s Best of Denver issues of 2013 and 2015.

The idea of being able to just port what you're doing in a classroom into an online environment has its own problems. But trying to do that in the midst of a pandemic is another problem altogether."

Colorado Restaurant Association CEO Sonia Riggs said that business at most eateries was down between 20% and 50% by March 13, even before the new coronavirus restrictions — it is likely to be devastating for some businesses in the short term and transformational for some time to come.
“The impact is going to be extremely widespread,” said Andrew Friedson, an assistant professor of economics at the University of Colorado Denver. “Nobody has a sense of how long this is going to last or how widespread it’s going to be.”
