Christine G. H. Franck, a classically trained architect, educator, and writer, who founded the Center for Advanced Research in Traditional Architecture at the University of Colorado Denver, sees the impact of the controversy as more dire. “I worry that 30 years of my work has been set back because of this executive order,” she says. “I don’t want students suddenly running to the hills because they think classicism is about white supremacy.”
Franck’s position is complicated. She is a member of the board of NCAS over which Shubow presides, though she declares herself a liberal whose first reaction to learning about the executive order (and only after the document was leaked to the press, she says) was “real sadness.” It “created a situation where discourse about an important topic—the architecture of federal buildings—is going to be difficult now,” she says, adding that she hoped constructive dialogue would come out of it.
