Experts advise taking a lot of small steps on the path to housing built for climate change

Temperatures are heating up. Air quality is declining. Droughts, floods and other extreme weather events are multiplying. Water is disappearing. More people are coming.
“It’s a rough transition to talk about the tiny little policy things that I’m talking about in the face of all this,” University of Colorado Denver planning professor Jennifer Steffel Johnson acknowledged as a panel discussion on climate change and affordable housing shifted from the former to the latter.

Agriculture symposium takes look at what’s on the horizon for Colorado farmers, ranchers

Technology, new partnerships, the growing demand for locally grown food and hands-on education programs in the schools are fueling enthusiasm, speakers at the Colorado Proud “Next Generation of Ag” symposium said.
“It’s a little bit like the wild West right now, which is really exciting. There’s just so much innovation and people are creating new ways of connecting with people,” said Amanda Weaver, a University of Colorado Denver professor who teaches in the department of geography and environmental sciences.

This Alaskan forest eats a ton of carbon. The Trump administration wants to let loggers cut it down.

On Tuesday, the Forest Service revealed a plan that, if enacted next year, could let developers build roads and chop down trees in more than half of the Tongass National Forest in southeastern Alaska.
“Logging not only reduces the forest’s ability to store carbon and the number of trees, it disrupts the soil badly,” Brian Buma, an assistant professor who studies forest ecology at the University of Colorado Denver, told VICE News. “That can impact salmon streams.”

Why lowering the voting age would make for a better democracy

It's true that some young people are not well-informed. But it's undemocratic to exclude them from the vote on that basis, argues Michael Cummings, a professor of political science at the University of Colorado Denver who has studied youth voting issues.
"In a democracy, the citizens should have a right to vote because public policy affects them," Cummings told Mic. "In a democracy, we don't say, 'How smart are you? Oh you're pretty smart, so we'll let you vote.'"

‘Sugar daddy’ relationships aren’t just about cash for sex: study

Sugaring or “mutually beneficial” relationships are not new, but they “have gained increasing attention in the United States over the past decade,” says study author Maren Scull. The professor from the University of Colorado, Denver, attributes the rise to the increase in sugar daddy matching websites, such as SugarDaddyForMe.com — and media coverage.
“There was so much variety that I knew I had to highlight the different nuances and forms that sugar relationships can take,” Scull says. “We were missing how they are often organic and involve genuine, emotional connection.”

Climate change is causing yellow cedar decline

Brian Buma has been tracking yellow cedar’s decline. He’s an ecologist at the University of Colorado. He says researchers don’t understand why some stands of yellow cedar have been resilient to warming and others have not. Still, Buma says, the decision not to list it shouldn’t be a reflection of the tree’s long term status.
“It’s not a clean bill of health,” Buma said. “Them saying, ‘It’s not listed,’ I’m afraid people will see that and say, ‘Oh, it’s fine.’ And it’s not fine.” Buma says yellow cedar might not go extinct in the next 20 years or so. But the tree’s decline is expected to continue as the temperature warms.

Professor pushes for more proactive ways to fight wildfires

“If it burns, we rebuild it, we fight back, and it’s a very human thing to do,” says Brian Buma, a professor at CU Denver.
Buma is trying to get people to think differently about fires, especially because he says there will be more of them.
“The problem is, we have an ecosystem that is highly flammable, many years, and we have a lot of people living in it. That’s compounded by the fact that the climate is warming up, things are getting dryer, things are getting more flammable,” says Buma.

‘Redshirting’ your kindergartner: Is it the right choice in the long run?

The term “redshirting” originally referred to college athletes who sat out their first year to work on their skills without affecting their eligibility. The intent is similar for would-be kindergartners: By providing younger kids an extra year to develop physically, socially and emotionally, the expectation is that they’ll be better equipped to succeed. “No matter when you set it, you’re always going to have a classroom of kids who have at least 12 months of developmental difference,” says Kristie Kauerz, who directs the National P-3 Center at the School of Education and Human Development at the University of Colorado at Denver.
