Millions of people crossing Denver’s 650 bridges depend on one professor and his students to keep them safe

Kevin Rens, PhD, is one of seven inductees into the inaugural TIAA Chancellor’s Urban Engaged Scholars program, a designation which recognizes outstanding contributions to the Denver metro region through community-engaged scholarship.

There are 650 bridges in the city and county of Denver, and Kevin Rens (PhD, PE) knows exactly what condition each of them is in.

Since 1997, the professor, chair, and director of the Civil Engineering Department in the College of Engineering, Design and Computing has inspected every one of Denver’s bridges either annually or biannually in order to uncover any issues that could affect the safety of the public. Through this work, Rens and his students help maintain a vast network infrastructure that is prone to deterioration under Colorado’s harsh winter weather.
