CU Denver’s Peer Advocate Leader (PAL) Program, now in its fourth year, has been recognized by the College Reading and Learning Association (CRLA) with the International Mentor Training Program Certification (IMTPC). The IMTPC designation certifies that PAL is in compliance with international mentor training standards.
PAL promotes leadership for CU Denver students by matching undergraduate student leaders with first-year students. The mentoring relationship is designed to foster student engagement and academic success by providing peer-level support that encourages student achievement, growth and learning throughout students’ academic careers. PAL mentor training is a key component to ensure that effective and ethical mentorship is adopted.
“We started with an idea and nine mentors, and now we’ve more than doubled in size, and we’re serving more than 1,000 students each year,” said Lynda Duran, PAL coordinator. “Navigating the college experience can be a challenge on so many levels. Many of our participants struggled with their own obstacles as new students, and they have chosen to be a PAL by making sure students get the support they need at CU Denver.”
The PAL program has come full circle with many students who were helped by a PAL in the first few years now applying to be a PAL mentor. The PAL program is designed to help any CU Denver student with any student needs.
CU Denver earned the CRLA International Mentor Training Program Certification — Level 1 and 2 — which is in effect through next spring.
CRLA represents a group of student-oriented professionals active in the fields of reading, learning assistance, developmental education, tutoring, and mentoring at the college/adult level. The CRLA motto is ‘Sharing the best for student success.’
