Provost Karen Marrongelle, PhD, is pleased to announce the appointment of Professor of Communication Hamilton Bean, PhD, as interim assistant vice chancellor for academic planning, effective Jan. 20 through June 2026.

In this role, Bean will oversee CU Denver’s policy development, accreditation, and other elements of program review, including the annual program check-in process. He will also report to the provost during this period and work closely with the Office of Institutional Research and Effectiveness (OIRE) to manage and use data to generate stronger student and university outcomes. “I am looking forward to helping ensure stability and continuity in this role,” Bean said. “Making sure all accreditation and planning deadlines and requirements are met during this period is my top priority.”

Bean has been chair of CU Denver’s department of communication since August 2024 and has been a member of the faculty since 2009. He has served in international program accreditation roles since 2016. For nine years, he directed CU Denver’s International Studies Program, with close involvement in our partnership with International College Beijing.

He specializes in the study of communication and security with an emphasis on mobile public alert and warning systems and messages. He has published research and served in editorial leadership in various international academic journals. “Hamilton brings to this role incredible skill sets in communication, research, and program management,” Marrongelle said. “I am delighted to have his leadership and thought partnership on the provost team.”

Sarah Fields, PhD, and Mia Fischer, PhD, will serve as interim co-chairs of the department of communication through June 2026. Bean can be reached regarding academic planning and accreditation inquiries at hamilton.bean@ucdenver.edu.
