Spring Commencement: Important Dates to Remember

April 23, 2020

Spring commencement will look different this year, and we understand that’s very disappointing for our families and graduates. To help in the fight against COVID-19, we have to do what we can to protect the well-being of our community, and right now large gatherings aren’t safe.

In case you missed it: Watch a message from Chancellor Horrell regarding Spring 2020 Commencement.

The University Events team has worked diligently to come up with alternatives to honor our incredible Lynx for their academic accomplishments and perseverance through these challenging times. Below is a recap of the Spring 2020 Commencement options, along with important deadlines that are quickly approaching.

Note: Graduates can select multiple options!

Option 1) Regalia Rental for Photos

Herff Jones will rent regalia to anyone who would still like to receive it in order to take photos themselves. New orders for regalia, announcements, diploma frames, caps, tassels and more can be placed here. Requests for converting already placed order for home-shipping or requests for refunds can be placed here. All orders and requests must be received by May 16, 2020.

Shipping is complimentary for cap and gown items, so graduates are only responsible for the rental fees. Regalia will include a return shipping label for graduates to return their regalia. Please return gowns and hoods within two weeks of receipt. Caps/tams and tassels are yours to keep.

Note: Honor cords are distributed by advising offices and will be mailed to graduates automatically when staff are back on campus.

Option 2) Virtual Ceremony with Graduate Custom Slides and Name Reading

Graduates are invited to participate in a customizable virtual ceremony. Degrees will be conferred, remarks will be presented by university leadership, and student names will be read. Each graduate can customize their slide to include their own photo and an expression of gratitude to those who supported their educational success. The ceremony will be held on Saturday, May 16, 2020.

Photos and expressions of gratitude are due by 11:55 p.m. Friday, May 8. Unique, individual links will be emailed to each graduate from Marching Order, so be sure to keep an eye on your inbox. If a student didn’t receive a link, they should email commencement@ucdenver.edu.

Join the ceremony watch party! Tag your photos and share your slides using #CUDenverGrad and tune in to the University of Colorado Denver Facebook page to watch the ceremony with SGA leaders and see your posts shared live.

Option 3) In-Person Ceremony for May Graduates

For graduates and their families who wish to celebrate in person, a standalone celebration specifically for May graduates will be held on Friday, Dec. 11, 2020 at 6 p.m. at the Colorado Convention Center. This ceremony will be designed to recognize the spring 2020 graduating class and all graduates in attendance will have their names read. All participants will receive a diploma cover and programs.

Students who wish to participate in the Dec. 11 ceremony should RSVP here. You will receive information about registering for the ceremony and renting regalia once that order site becomes available.

Please note:

  • If students elect to ship rental regalia to themselves via option 1, they will still need to pay all commencement fees for the Dec. 11 ceremony.
  •  Graduates who had previously registered and would like to participate in the Dec. 11 ceremony will not be able to roll over their registration. You will need to cancel your existing order and then place a new order for the Dec. 11 ceremony.
  • Graduation is separate from commencement. Students who wish to participate in the in-person December celebration should not withdraw their graduation application for spring 2020. This ensures you will receive your official printed diploma in the mail in July.
  • If graduates cannot attend the Dec. 11 ceremony, they can elect to participate in any future commencement ceremony. Visit www.ucdenver.edu/commencement during the semester you’d like to attend commencement in order to register.

Option 4) Diploma Cover & Program Mailing

Graduates who cannot attend the in-person ceremony in December and would like to receive a diploma cover and three copies of a program as a keepsake must fill out this form by May 16, 2020. These items will be mailed to graduates in late May.

Alternatively, once the Registrar’s office is open on campus, graduates may stop by the fifth floor of the Student Commons building at their convenience to pick up a diploma cover.

All students who complete their degree requirements in the spring semester and graduate will receive their official printed diplomas in the mail in July.

We extend a note of gratitude and understanding to our graduates. We know this isn’t easy. Together, we are #LynxStrong.
