The University of Colorado Denver is pleased to announce a new partnership with COVIDCheck Colorado, a social benefit enterprise of the Gary Community Investment Company, which is part of the Gary Community Investments umbrella organization.
COVIDCheck Colorado was created to help organizations like CU Denver navigate the COVID-19 pandemic and return to school, work, and daily life safely. As part of CU Denver’s safe return to campus, COVIDCheck Colorado will provide students, faculty, and staff access to precise, timely COVID-19 testing. CU Denver began its regular asymptomatic testing of nearly 400 residential students, staff, and contractors in its residence hall, Lynx Crossing, last week. This week, CU Denver is broadening access and providing asymptomatic testing to students, faculty, and staff who are coming to campus, in an effort to stop potential outbreaks before they start.
“We are incredibly grateful to partner with an organization whose access to testing is not only safe and accurate, but has rapid turnaround time for results,” says Michelle Marks, PhD, chancellor of CU Denver. “This adds an additional layer of protection for our students and bolsters our return-to-campus plans, emphasizing the safety, health, and wellness of our Lynx community.”
Students, faculty, and staff will have access to an online platform where they can schedule an appointment to get tested for COVID-19 at many of COVIDCheck Colorado’s sites across the Denver metro area for a fee of $10. CU Denver will be providing a number of free tests for students who cannot pay. There will be a test site available at Lynx Crossing Residence Hall in September and students living in this location will be tested every two to three weeks, free of charge, for the first part of the semester.
In terms of turnaround time, testing results should be available in 72 hours or less. As we move forward with expanding access to testing, those who test positive for COVID-19 will receive a phone call from a telehealth provider who will offer support and guidance on self-isolation as well as contact from a campus medical provider. As required by law, all positive cases will be reported to Denver Public Health.
“In order for colleges and universities to provide students a safe and healthy environment, leaders in higher education must have timely and accurate information about the prevalence of COVID-19 in their residence halls in addition to classrooms and lecture halls,” says Mike Johnston, CEO of Gary Community Investments.
“The University of Colorado Denver is no exception, and we’ve been glad to partner with them to provide students living on campus access to testing before they move into their residences, and we’re excited to support their efforts to provide testing to even more individuals on campus in an effort to stop potential outbreaks before they start.”
