People everywhere want to know what the key is to health and well-being. Amber Long, executive director of the Lola & Rob Salazar Student Wellness Center, has some ideas from her decades of experience in the field.
Under Long’s leadership, the Student Wellness Center received the 2019 NIRSA Outstanding Sports Facilities Award. The health coach and exercise professional shared her knowledge of student mental health and well-being in a blog post for the National Intramural and Recreational Sports Association (NIRSA).
Additionally, Lauren Brown, assistant director of facilities and operations for Wellness & Recreation Services received NIRSA’s 2019 Annual Service Award.
In her blog post, Long writes about the importance of whole-person well-being and challenges her staff team to:
- Lead by example (practice personal wellness habits).
- Inspire your circle of influence (support family, friends and colleagues to practice wellness habits).
- Engage the unengaged (start conversations with students and colleagues on campus, step into discomfort and welcome others to wellness – especially those who are not well).
